PRIDE AROUND THE WORLD

Each June, we honor the anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in countries around the globe! Here are some of the most epic celebrations.

New York: Where Pride was born

New York is where the Pride movement was born. Following the police raid of the Stonewall Inn on 28 June 1969, the LGBTQ community started demonstrations led by the one and only Marsha Johnson. This became the catalyst for LGTBQ movements across the US in 1970, and around the world.

Today the New York Pride on the last weekend of June is one of the largest in the world, attracting crowds of around 2 million!

Paris, France

Grab your friends and head to Le Marais, Paris’ gay district, for a week of non-stop parties that ends with one big event: Marche des Fiertés LGBTQ (Paris Gay Pride Parade). Marche des Fiertés LGBTQ is a historic event for the French capital, born in the 80’s when a group of locals from the community united over a fight for LGBTQ+ rights.

The procession starts at Concorde and winds its way through Chatelet, Le Marais, Pont de Sully, and Bastille, before concluding with a massive (and free!) party at Place de la République.

Madrid, Spain

The “Fiestas del Orgullo Gay” of Madrid takes place on the last Saturday of June each year and it is the biggest in Europe, attracting around 2 million people each year. The largest was WorldPride Madrid 2017, which had an estimated 3.5 million people attend.

The first Madrid Pride took place in 1979 following the passing away of Fascist dictator Francisco Franco, which led to a huge renaissance of democracy and liberal values in Spain. As a result, Spain has today transformed into one of the most gay-friendly countries in the world.

Sao Paulo, Brazil

The “Parada Gay Sao Paulo” is notorious for being the largest Pride in the world, attracting a staggering 3-5 million people each year. Sao Paulo's Pride began in 1997 and takes place on the first weekend of June along the city's main street called “Paulista Avenue”.

Fun fact! It was famously featured in the Netflix show “Sense8” where Lito used his platform at Sao Paulo Pride to publicly come out.

Tel Aviv, Israel

Tel Aviv is one of the most popular Pride beach parties. It takes place in mid-June, attracting crowds of around 200,000. The climax of the event is the large beach party on Charles Clore beach.

The other important point to note about Tel Aviv Pride is that it is the only successful annual Pride to take place in the Middle East.

Los Angeles, California

It’s no exaggeration to say that Pride month is a big deal in L.A. The annual LA Pride Festival and Parade features citywide events throughout the month of June, including Pride in the Park, an outdoor concert.

But the star of the show, of course, is the LA Pride Parade, which became the very first permitted gay pride parade in the world in 1970.

Sydney, Australia

Pride isn’t just a day or week in Sydney...it’s practically a whole month! Beginning on June 2, attendees can enjoy four weeks jam-packed with all sorts of LGBTQ events.

And in addition to the Sydney Pride Festival, the city also hosts the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras each February. The parade and party, which travels down Oxford Street through the heart of Sydney's main LGBTQ district, features spectacular floats and attracts thousands of visitors. The tradition of the event began in 1978, when a small group of protestors gathered in Sydney’s Darlinghurst neighborhood and were met with police violence and arrests. Today, Mardi Gras is one of Australia’s most popular events in the nation.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize gay marriage. Taking place in early August, Amsterdam Pride boasts a packed schedule filled with over 300 events.

That includes a tour of the city’s LGBTQ history, a musical production of Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), and plenty of dance parties! Unlike other Pride parades, Amsterdam’s takes place in the city’s iconic canals and is the only canal parade in the world! With over 80 floats planned to be on the water, it’s an event not to be missed.

Taipei, Taiwan

In 2019, this island country became the first in Asia to legalize gay marriage. Among the largest Pride events in Asia (and the biggest in East Asia), Taiwan's annual Pride parade takes place in Taipei on the last Saturday of October.

The event began as a political rally in 2003 and has since evolved into a dynamic festival. In addition to the Pride parade, the celebration also features a host of parties at Taipei’s top gay bars and LGBTQ-welcoming hotels throughout the weekend.

Johannesburg, South Africa

With over 30 years of advocacy, Johannesburg Pride has grown to become the most established and well-attended Pride event in South Africa!

In 2019, Johannesburg Pride created Pride of Africa: a platform for a diverse community. And be sure to also check out Afropunk, one of the most popular Black festivals in South Africa!

So. Where are you celebrating Pride this year?
