Africa Bucket List

A huge continent with 54 possibilities, but I've narrowed it down to my top 10 for this dream African destination list...

DISCLAIMER:

This may or may not be an excuse to create an African Continent Travel Mood Board...

1. GHANA - The Mother Land

I've had my eye on Ghana for a while, particularly the city of Accra. I'd visit the seaside settlement of Cape Coast and experience the history behind the once-slave-port, now a cultural destination in its own right. I'd take a moment to step through the "Door of no Return," which was, for many, their last glimpse of Africa. To travel here as a Black person, on my own free will, would be invigorating and empowering. I can't imagine what I'll feel if given the chance to visit this country. Next, I'd hop on a train to travel further inland and experience the country's vast savannas, hike mountains, and maybe walk the treetop walkway at Kakum National Park...time to conquer my fear of heights!

2. KENYA

Kenya first found its place on my Africa bucket list when I heard about Giraffe Manor. Cliche, I know, but can you blame me? It's a beautiful hotel where you can feed giraffes during your morning tea! Or swing in the courtyard whilst these long-necked giants walk around you! A dream! Kenya is also a terrific safari destination, full of diverse landscapes and cultures. I'd watch flamingos in Great Rift Valley, witness the great migration in Maasai Mara, and explore Kenya's capital city, Nairobi, where there's a statue dedicated to Queen Amina (half my namesake!). Kenya is definitely a place for the adventurous!

3. RWANDA

Known for its breathtaking scenery, Rwanda is often referred to as le pays des mille collines (French: “land of a thousand hills”). The name is fitting - from volcanoes to Nyungwe Forest, to lake Ruhundo, there is no shortage of beautiful and picturesque locations in Rwanda. I'd hit up Kimironko Market for fish, potatoes, millet, fruits, to experience the rich food culture of the country. And for my fellow vegetarians/pescatarians, there will always be options - Rwandans only eat meat a few times a month!

4. MAURITIUS

With its clear blue waters, white sandy beaches, and tropical climate, Mauritius is often a go-to destination for those looking to relax and unwind. But don't let the island vibes fool you - there is more to this tropical paradise than coconuts and days upon days of snorkeling. With plenty of history, culture, and buzzing nightlife, thrill-seekers like me would definitely find something to do in between sipping cane rum on the beach!

5. MADAGASCAR

Just off the coast of the continent, this island is nothing short of breathtaking. While lemurs and Madagascar's unique wildlife and nature are what usually draw people to visit the country, that's just the very beginning. It's most definitely a place for the adventurous and the patient, as it requires a lot of time to really take in the fourth largest island in the world. I'd visit the beachside Ifaty, Antananaviro, Ambohimanga for a taste of local culture before hitting the expansive forests and natural areas.

6. SUDAN

To put it simply, Sudan is an extremely underrated travel destination. I never hear much about it when people talk about travel to the African continent! After talking to people who have visited Sudan, there seems to be a consensus that the people of Sudan make the experience. Kindness and hospitality are part of Sudanese culture, as much as their language is. It sounds like such an immersive experience in respect to culture, and I'd be sure to take the time to talk with locals and get accustomed to their customs. I'd visit Sudan for the people with whom I'd share uncountable cups of tea, coffee, and meals!

7. MOROCCO

Chaotic, colorful, eye-opening. These are a few of the adjectives used by folks who have traveled to the picturesque country of Morocco. Whether you're getting lost in the medinas and raids of Marrekach, trekking the Torda Gorge, or catching some waves at Agadir, there's something here for every kind of traveler. I've heard Morocco attacks the senses with its vast beauty, bustling cities and culture. While it may seem overwhelming, to be engulfed by so much at once sounds beautiful! And who could forget the "Blue City," Chefchaouen? Definitely a place at the top of my bucket list for travel, period. Did I mention blue is my favorite color?

8. ETHIOPIA

My first thought when it came to Ethiopia was: wildlife! And while there is a plethora of unique wildlife and nature - with astonishing landscapes like the mountains of the north to the otherworldly salt flats and lava lake of the Erta Ale volcano - there is so much more to the country than meets the eye. I'd have to visit the castles in Gondar, the Menz Plateau, and of course enjoy the country's staple Injera meal.

9. EGYPT

Pyramids. Literal pyramids, thousands of years old. If you're a history buff like me, Egypt is probably already on your mind as a top travel destination. I've dreamed of visiting Cairo, mounting a camel, and taking in the pyramids and Great Sphinx as the sun sets over the horizon. Besides the Great Pyramids of Giza, there are the monuments of Luxor, the Nile, Old Kingdom, and the Red Sea. After all that, I'd probably want a souvenir, so I'd hit up one of Egypt's many souqs!

10. SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa is a country of diverse ecosystems, beach towns, and buzzing cities. I'd stop by City Centre, Cape Town’s vibrant business and commercial heart, and browse their chain stores, surf shops, and fashion boutiques. Then, I'd the oceanic drive around Cape Point, go on a hike in Skeleton Gorge, and take the cable car up Table Mountain. After that, I'd hit up Bombay Bicycle Club. Nope! It's not a bike shop, it's a restaurant! Its bohemian vibe, delicious menu and colorful history would be sure to satisfy me after a day of exploring!

Say it louder for the people in the back:

AFRICA IS A LUXURY TRAVEL DESTINATION!

Europe ain't the only place for that getaway, sis.
